We All Begin Somewhere

No matter where you've been so far, or where you want to go in the future, we all start somewhere.

And... we need to know where that is.

It's not to dwell on the choices you've made up until now. Rather, it's just so you can create a road map to where you want to be. Saying you want to be healthier or want to lose weight or even more specifically, you want to enter a race or a bodybuilding contest is great but at some point you have to begin and to do that you have got to know where you are. You have got to give yourself an honest assessment of where you are right now or in many cases you won't ever begin.

As I write these words today, I weigh in at 259.6 lbs. I'm 5'10" tall. I am decidedly out of shape. I used to run 5 miles to work and then back home again at the end of the day. That was not my workout, just my commute. Today, the thought of running 5 miles doesn't scare me but the act of running even 2 miles hurts.

How I got to this point is only important as it relates to my nutritional and exercise habits. I could come up with loads of excuses and stories as to why I am where I am but they are just that... stories and excuses.

What is important is I know where I am today, can measure my progress, assess what's working (and what's not), make adjustments and visualize my goal.

Ahh, the goal. I'll get to that shortly. For now it's enough to know where I am and that it is not where I want to be.
